The problem

A major client of ours had recently gone out to market to cover one of their HR Business Partners who was heading off on maternity leave. Following good practice they had done this in good time, and had made an offer. Unfortunately, the offer fell through two weeks before the start date and they found themselves back at square one. As an established supplier, we were thrown the challenge of finding someone in double quick time!

What we did

The difficulty of finding good people well-suited to an organisation is compounded when the role on offer is a Fixed Term Contract – inevitably, only a small subset of the market will entertain a role with specified end date, especially if candidates are currently in a permanent role. Given our client’s timescales we knew we needed to act quickly and arranged for targeted mailings, advertising and a network referral request to go out that day. Hitting lots of people within 24 hours we generated plenty of interest despite the FTC nature; the task of identifying the highest calibre people within that response now needed swift attention.


Timing is everything in scenarios like this and, due to our swift action and our market reach we managed to find a number of people fresh onto the market which we refined to create a strong shortlist (in this case, one relocator, one candidate coming out of an interim role and another candidate just out via redundancy). The client interviewed quickly and offered on the day; a tricky assignment but we got there… and our efforts were appreciated by both sides!
